In Barbie Cool Looks Fashion Designer the player can select clothes for Barbie Christie, Kira or Teresa. The player selects the clothes from those on display in the girl's room which they can then customise by choosing from eighty-four fabric designs, colouring them from a thirty-five colour palette (though only four colours per design are allowed), and have the girls model the clothes at the mall, office, park, beach or in their bedroom. The player's creations are saved in a wardrobe and can be revisited at any time to be worn by any of the games characters. Clothes consist of a range of hats, dresses, shirts, skirts, pants, accessories and jackets etc. The player clicks on an item in a girl's room and then scrolls through the available options, at this stage all the clothes are white. Once something pleasing has been found the player then proceeds to the design part of the game where the clothes can be coloured in giving, for example, an all black jacket or a pattern can be selected in which case individual parts of the pattern can be coloured in. Once designed these can be exported and shared with other players who have the same game or they can be printed. The clothing options available vary depending on the location they are going to so, for example, if we're taking Christie to the beach the dress would be replaced with a swimsuit, handbags would be replaced by beach bags, shoes would be replaced by sandals etc. The print function is an important feature of this game as in-game photos of the girls modelling the new clothes can be printed in colour as gifts, in black and white to be coloured in off live. Patterns for Barbie fashion accessories, both for the player and the doll, can also be printed along with assembly instructions. The tutorial also refers to printing dress patterns on Barbie Fashion Fabric but it is not clear whether this is a print of a plain pattern or the players entire design colours and all. Within the game all instructions are spoken - there is nothing to read on screen.
