'Indie boom' altitude engine, Steam releases surge

'Godot Engine' has been showing exponential growth in the number of game releases on the Steam platform along with an explosive increase in users in recent years.

On the 6th, developer Clay John of Godot Foundation released engine growth indicators that compile data such as open source game engine usage, community size, and game jam adoption rate through the company's official blog. Developer John analyzed the overall growth trajectory and performance of 'Godot Engine' by collecting data scattered across multiple channels.

According to published indicators, the number of downloads through the website reaches approximately 2 million each time a stable major version is distributed. Users showed a stable usage pattern of maintaining the major version and quickly updating to the minor version when a new patch was released. In addition, the cumulative number of installations through Steam and Google Play Store is also showing a steady upward curve.

The most notable achievement is the game release indicator. According to SteamDB data, the number of Steam-released games produced using the 'Godot Engine' has recently shown exponential growth. Even on itch.io, an indie game-centered platform, an overwhelming number of projects are continuously being registered thanks to its low barrier to entry.

Engine adoption rates are also rising at major game jam events where the influx of next-generation developers can be seen. The adoption rate is steadily increasing in Global Game Jam and GMTK Game Jam, and in particular, GMTK Game Jam is recording an explosive increase in market share between 2023 and 2024, aiming to exceed 50% adoption rate in the future.

The size of communities centered on social media in Western countries has also doubled in recent years. Considering that growth data from countries that mainly use other platforms, such as the Discord community and China, is excluded, the actual global user size is estimated to have increased even more rapidly.

On the other hand, the size of Godot Development Fund's regular monthly donations remains at a certain level compared to the explosive growth in users. There was a temporary surge in donations in October 2024 and December 2025 when the fundraising campaign was conducted, but the overall amount of financial resources has not changed significantly.

Regarding this phenomenon, the Godot Foundation analyzed that new users either perceive that the foundation's financial power is already sufficient, or are satisfied with the current engine development speed and do not feel the need for additional sponsorship. In addition, the tendency to perceive it as a simple 'free substitute' for commercial engines was also found to have had an impact.
